Award Judging

Competitions and awards

In the past few years John has been judging for his local “Ipswich in Bloom” group, which forms part of the wider “Britain in Bloom” campaign.  In 2013 his scope widened and he judged for the “Anglia in Bloom” competition focussing on coastal towns.  However, entries reduced in 2014 and he was not needed to help.  Recently he has been judging for the “Green Flag Award” scheme.

Benefits to entrants

Judging these competitions is not just about awarding points and giving scores.  An important part of the judging process is helping the various groups to identify where they can make improvements that will really make a difference to the local environment and to those that live and work there.  Equally important is the opportunity to have their site or project looked at independently.  We all ignore the things that might stand out to others.

Why judge

This type of work John believes is important as it keeps his feet very firmly on the ground and in touch with the day to day issues faced by local communities and land managers.  There is so much enthusiasm out there for the local environment.  It also refreshes his knowledge and allows him to share good practice with other groups he comes across.
